6.  Hanumāna Cālīsā (Mystical)

Śrī guru caraṇa saroja raja, nija manu mukuru sudhāri।
baranaūṃ raghubara bimala jasu, jo dāyaku phala cāri॥

Cleansing the mirror in the form of my mind with the pollen of the Guru's lotus feet, I describe the spotless glory of Rama, who bestows the four fruits.

Buddhihī na tanu jānike, sumirauṃ pavanakumāra।
bala buddhi bidyā dehu mohiṃ harahu kalesa bikāra॥

Knowing that my body was devoid of intelligence, I remember Hanūmān, the son of Vāyu. Give me strength, intelligence and knowledge and eliminate all diseases (kleśa) and impurities (bikāra).

jaya hanumāna jñāna guṇa sāgara।
jaya kapīsa tihuṃ loka ujāgara॥ ॥1

O Hanūmān, the ocean of knowledge and virtues, may you be victorious. O leader among the famous Vanaras through the three Lokas (Pātāla, Prithvi (earth) and Svarga), may you be victorious.

rāma duta atulita bala dhāmā।
añjaniputra pavanasuta nāmā॥ ॥2

You are Rama's trusted messenger and you are the abode of incomparable strength. You are known as Anjaniputra (son of Anjana) and Pavanasuta (son of Vāyu).

mahābīra bikrama bajaraṅgī।
kumati nivāra sumati ke saṅgī॥ ॥3

You are the great hero, you are endowed with valor, your body is as strong as the Vajra of Indra. You are the destroyer of base intellect, and you are the companion of one whose intellect is pure.

kancana barana birāja subesā।
kānana kuṇḍala kuñcita kesā॥ ॥4

Your complexion is that of molten gold, and you shine in your beautiful form. You wear Kuṇḍalas (small earrings once worn by Hindus) in your ears and your hair is curled.

hātha bajra to dhvajā birājai।
kāṃdhe mūṃja janeū sājai॥ ॥5

You have the Vajra and the flag in your hands, and the sacred son (Yajnopavita) made of Munja grass adorns your shoulder.

ṣaṅkara suvana kesarīnandana।
teja pratāpa mahā jaga bandana॥ ॥6

O incarnation of Shiva (or son of Vāyu carrying the power of Śiva), the delight of Kesari, your aura and your majesty are great and are revered by the whole world.

vidyāvāna guṇī ati cātura।
rama kāja karibe ko ātura॥ ॥7

You are the praiseworthy abode of the eighteen types of Vidyā (knowledge), all virtues reside within you, and you are exceedingly intelligent. You are always eager to perform tasks for Rama.

prabhu caritra sunibe ko rasiyā।
rama lakhana sītā mana basiyā॥ ॥8

You like to listen to the acts of Rāma (Rāmayana). Rāma, Lakshmana and Sita reside in your mind.  Alternatively, you reside in the mind of Rāma, Lakshmana and Sita [due to their affection towards you].

sūkṣma rūpa dhari siyahiṁ dikhāvā।
bikaṭa rūpa dhari laṇka jarāvā॥ ॥9

You took an extremely minute form and appeared to Sita in the Ashok Vatika. You took on a very large and fearsome form and set the city of Lanka on fire.

bhīma rūpa dhari asura saṃhāre।
rāmacandra ke kāja saṃvāre॥ ॥10

You took on a fearsome form and destroyed the demons [in Ravana's army]. You have completed all of Rama's tasks.

lāya sajīvana lakhana jiyaye।
śrī raghubīra haraṣi ura laye॥ ॥11

You have brought Sanjivini, the life-saving herb of Dronagiri to the Himalayas, and revitalized Lakshman. Out of joy, Rāma took you in his arms.

raghupati kīnhī bahuta barāī।
tuma mama priya bharatahi sama bhāī॥ ॥12

Rāma, the chief among the descendants of Raghu, praised you profusely saying, “You are dear to me like my brother Bharata.

sahasa badana tumharo jasa gāvaiṁ।
asa kahi śrīpati kaṇṭha lagāvaiṃ॥ ॥13

Translation of Rao and Mehta - Rāma also added that a thousand people will praise the glory of Hanūmān and embrace him again.

sanakādika brahmādi munīsā।
nārada sārada sahita ahīsā॥ ॥14
jama kubera digapāla jahāṃ te।
kabi kobida kahi sake kahāṃ te॥ ॥15

Rao and Mehta translate the two verses as saints like Sanka, Bramha, Munisa, Narad, Sarad, Sahit and Ahisa blessed Hanūmān; Yama (God of death), Kubera (God of wealth), Dikpala (gods of eight directions), Kavis (poets), Kovidas (folk singers) cannot describe Hanūmān's reputation.

tuma upakāra sugrīvahiṁ kīnhā।
rāma milāya rāja pada dīnhā॥ ॥16

You have done Sugriva a great favor by bringing him to meet Rama and granting him the kingdom of Kishkindha.

tumharo mantra bibhīṣana mānā।
lankeṣvara bhae saba jaga jānā॥ ॥17

Your Mantra was accepted by Vibishana, after which he became the King of Lanka.  The whole world knows this.

juga sahastra jojana para bhānū।

līlyo tāhi madhura phala jānū॥ ॥18

Alone, you rushed to the sun, Surya, which is thousands of miles away, thinking it was a sweet fruit. "

prabhu mudrikā meli mukha māhīṁ।
jaladhi lāṃghi gaye acaraja nāhīṁ॥ ॥19

O Lord, placing the ring given by Rāma in your mouth, you jumped across the ocean – there is nothing surprising here.

durgama kāja jagata ke jete।
sugama anugraha tumhare head॥ ॥20

All the inaccessible tasks in the world become easily achievable with your grace.

rāma duāre tuma rakhavāre।
hota na ājñā binu paisāre॥ 21 ॥

You are the gatekeeper and protector of the gate to Rama's court. Without your command, no one can enter the abode of Rama.

saba sukha lahai tumhārī ṣaranā।
tuma racchaka kāhū ko dara nā॥ ॥22

Once in your refuge, a Sādhaka gets all the pleasures. You are the protector and there is nothing to fear.

āpana teja samhāro āpai।
tī noṁ loka hāṃka teṁ kāṃpai॥ ॥23

When you roar, after remembering your powers, the three worlds tremble in fear.

bhūta pisāca nikaṭa nahiṃ āvai।
mahābīra jaba nāma sunāvai॥ ॥24

Evil spirits (bhūta) and meat-eating ghosts (pishācha) do not approach those who chant the name of Mahāvira.

nāsai roga harai saba pīrā।
japata nirantara hanumata bīrā॥ ॥25

Courageous Hanūmān, when invoked ceaselessly through Japa, destroys all disease and removes all suffering.

saṇkaṭa teṁ hanumāna chuṛāvai।
mana krama bacana dhyāna jo lavai॥ ॥26

Hanūmān releases those from all adversities who remember him (or contemplate on him) in their hearts, by their deeds and by their words.

saba para rāma tapasvī rājā।
tina ke kāja sakala tuma sājā॥ 27 ॥

Rama is the supreme God and a king with Tapas, yet you have performed all his tasks.

aura manoratha jo koī lavai।
soī amita jīvana phala pāvai॥ ॥28

And whoever comes to you with any wish, that wish is fulfilled beyond bounds (literally, "they get the unlimited fruit of the wish") in that very birth.

cāroṁ juga paratāpa tumhārā।
hai prasiddha jagata ujiyārā॥ ॥29

Your glory is famous in the four Yugas and illuminates the whole world.

sādhu santa ke tuma rakhavāre।
asura nikandana rāma dulāre॥ 30 .

You are the protector of Sadhus (good people or ascetics) and Sants (saints). You are the destroyer of demons and dear as a son to Rama.

aṣṭa siddhi nau nidhi ke dātā।
asa bara dīna jānakī mātā॥ 31 ॥

You are the giver of the eight Siddhis (supernatural powers named Aṇimā, Garimā, Mahimā, Laghimā, Prāpti, Prākāmya, Īśitva and Vaśitva) and the nine Nidhis (divine treasures named Mahāpadma, Padma, Śaṅkha, Makara, Kacchapa, Mukunda, Nīla and Kharva ). Mother Sita, Janaka's daughter, has granted you this boon.

rāma rasāyana tumhare pāsā।
sadā raho raghupati ke dāsā॥ ॥32

You have the treasure of Bhakti of Rāma (rāma rasāyana) with you. You are, respectfully, the servant of Raghupati (Śri Rām).

tumhare bhajana rāma ko pāvai।
janama janama ke duhkha bisarāvai॥ ॥33

By chanting to you (Hanūmān), a Bhakta obtains Rāma and forgets the adversities and afflictions of many births.

anta kāla raghubara pura jāī।
jahāṃ janma haribhakta kahāī॥ ॥34

Following your devotion, a Bhakta goes to Sāketa Loka (raghubara pura) at the time of their end (physical death). Once the Bhaktas reach Sāketa, wherever they take birth, they are known as the Bhaktas of Hari.

aura devatā citta na dharaī।
hanumata seī sarva sukha karaī॥ ॥35

Even one who thinks of no other Devatas in his mind and serves only Hanūmān, realizes all auspicious bliss in this world and the next.

One who remembers the brave and mighty Hanūmān gets freedom from all adversities and relief from all pains.

hanumāna gosāīṃ।
kṛpā karahu guru deva kī nāīṁ॥ ॥37

O Hanūmān, the lord of the senses, may you be victorious, may you be victorious, may you be victorious. May you shower your grace with love, as a guru does, and reveal to me the knowledge of devotion to Rama.

jo ṣata bāra pāṭha kara koī।
chūṭahi bandi mahā sukha hoī॥ ॥38

One who recites Hanūmān Cālīsā a hundred times (or for 100 days) is freed from bondage and obtains great bliss".

jo yaha paṛhai hanumāna cālīsā।
hoya siddhi sākhī gaurīsā॥ ॥39

One who reads this Hanūmān Cālīsā gets Siddhi (fulfillment or liberation). Śiva himself testifies to this statement.

tulasīdāsa sadā hari cerā।
kījai nātha hṛdaya maṃha ḍerā॥ ॥40

Tulsidas is still a Hari enthusiast. O Lord, make my heart your home.

pavanatanaya saṅkaṭa harana maṅgala mūrati rūpa।
rama lakhana sītā sahita hṛdaya basahu sura bhūpa॥

O Son of Vāyu, remover of adversities, one with auspicious form, and chief among all Devas, may you reside in our hearts with Rāma, Lakshman and Sītā.
